Explore Washington // Big Four Ice Caves

I’ve been seeing more and more ice cave photos and last week my new friend Tori suggested that we go and check them out. We got lost along the way but definitely didn’t mind. The entire drive was so breath-taking. We listened to fun music, talked, and sometimes just sat there quiet and basking in all the beauty. After we finally navigated our way to the trailhead, we started the pretty one mile walk to the base of the mountain, where the ice cave was located. It was melting but still so cool and worth the drive.

“Each day holds a surprise. but only if we expect it can we see, hear, or feel it when it comes to us. Let’s not be afraid to receive each day’s surprise, whether it comes to us as sorrow or as joy. It will open a new place in our hearts, a place where we can welcome new friends and celebrate more fully our shared humanity.” Henri Nouwen. The little surprises of a newfound kindred spirit and beautiful places make everyday life so wonderful. So thankful I got to explore more of Washington state. I love living in the Pacific Northwest!

  1. Jnana Hodson says:

My experience of the blue and green light in the tunnels of an ice cave on Mount Rainier remains vivid. But then, on the trek back, we got caught in freezing rain (early August) before we could get our ponchos on. I narrowly averted hypothermia. I’m still grateful to three cups of hot chocolate at the lodge at the trailhead!
